Ford Goes Electric at CES

While Ford certainly had a strong showing at the 2012 North American International Auto Show, the company also planned big for another even happening at the same time. We here at Freedom Ford are talking about the Consumer Electronics Show, also known as CES. Why would Ford invest time and resources into a computer electronics show? Simply put, because the show isn't all about handheld video devices anymore.

In recent years, the Consumer Electronics Show has actually becoming the premier place to debut EV technology. They are all-electric after all. And this year, Ford was the latest automaker to partake in this exciting new trend. Specifically, the American automaker showed off two upcoming electric vehicles at the show: The 2013 Ford Fusion Energi and 2013 Ford Focus EV.

The 2013 Fusion Energi is a plug-in hybrid that is set to feature the company's new "Green Zone" technology, which promises to optimize hybrid batteries in a whole new way. Rather than simply focusing on getting the highest mpg rating possible, the new Ford "Green Zone" platform will focus on the primary locations that your vehicle travels to and from. Once the vehicle has designated what the car's "Green Zones" are, it will keep the vehicle in battery-only mode within the range of that zone, then kick it into gas-electric hybrid mode once the threshold has been crossed.

While this represents an interesting why to maximize fuel economy depending on driving style, the 2013 Ford Focus EV offers drivers a truly zero-emissions driving experience. The company has yet to release an exact driving range, but they've made it clear that they aim to hit the standard 100-mile mark. Meanwhile, the company is already touting the fact that the Focus EV takes half the time that other competing electric models take to charge. In short, the Focus EV can hit a full charge in about four hours.
